THE BOOK BLURB:

YOU CANNOT CHANGE THE PAST

Easter 1974. .A family vanishes from their home on an idyllic island off the Swedish coast. They have left everything behind - including their one-year-old daughter, Ebba.

Now, years later, Ebba has returned to the island. She and her husband have suffered the loss of their only child and are looking to make a fresh start. But within days their house is the target of an arson attack.

YOU CANNOT ESCAPE THE FUTURE

Detective Patrik Hedstrom takes on the investigation, aided by his wife, crime writer Erica Falck, who has always been fascinated by the mystery of Ebba's abandonment and the family's tragoc history.

When dried blood is found under the floorboards of the old house, it seems that the cold case involving the missing family is about to be brought back to life. And soon, Patrik and Erica are consumed by the hunt for a killer who will stop at nothing to keep the past buried.

WHAT I SAY:

Camilla Lackberg isn’t known as Scandinavia’s crime queen for nothing. What links a serial killer in 1908, the mystery disappearance of a family from their home in 1974, and the terrorisation of a woman who as a baby was the only one left behind when the family went missing?

The theme running through this is of mothers – good, evil, and indifferent, they are all covered here in one form or another as the novel tells several different stories throughout history. In fact there are so many characters in so many eras that it can get very confusing remembering them all, especially in the beginning. for that reason, the book did sometimes feel like hard work rather than enjoyable. But each story is so fascinating that it is worth persevering with; and if you love putting together complex jigsaw puzzles of the mind, you will really enjoy this book.
